Royal Kostroma
On the spit of the Volga and Kostroma, the Ipatiev Monastery, founded by the founder of the Godunov dynasty in the early 14th century, stands majestically. Thanks to the Godunovs, in the 15th century the wooden walls were replaced with stone ones, the Trinity Cathedral was erected, and the monastery received rich contributions.
In the history of Russia, as the cradle of the royal dynasty, Kostroma entered in 1613. Here, from the hardships of the Time of Troubles, the nun Martha took refuge with her son Michael, who became the founder of the royal dynasty of the Romanovs.
Polish detachments were searching for Mikhail Romanov. On the way of the interventionists was a simple Kostroma peasant Ivan Susanin. He, having agreed to withdraw the detachment, led it into impenetrable swamps, where he was martyred.
The feat of Ivan Susanin inspired artists, poets, became the basis of M.I. Glinka "Life for the Tsar". Before the revolution, on the main square of Kostroma, there was a monument to Tsar Mikhail Romanov and Ivan Susanin, who saved him.
The great embassy arrived in Kostroma with a letter from the Zemsky Sobor and met with Mikhail under the walls of Hypatia. On March 14 (according to the old style), 1613, in the Holy Trinity Ipatiev Monastery, Mikhail Feodorovich Romanov, before the face of the miraculous Feodorovskaya Icon of the Mother of God, was blessed to reign.
The reign of Michael opened the 300th anniversary of the reign of the Romanov dynasty. The ruling sovereigns repeatedly visited Kostroma and the Ipatiev Monastery. Major celebrations took place in 1913, in connection with the arrival of Tsar Nicholas II in Kostroma, on the day of the celebration of the 300th anniversary of the Romanov dynasty.
Today, Kostroma annually hosts the Romanov Festival, which brings together many social and cultural events. The culmination of the festival is the Historical Day - March 27, when under the walls of the wooden Hypatia the events of the calling of Mikhail Romanov to the kingdom are recreated.
In 2013, Kostroma will be glad to host guests during the celebration of the 400th anniversary of the Romanov dynasty.
